Music in the past and present ( MGG ) is one of the most extensive music dictionaries in the world.

The first edition, published between 1949 and 1987, is considered to be the most important German-language musicological standard work after the Second World War. In 1989 a paperback edition was published, in 2001 an electronic edition as part of the digital library series with page concordance to the print edition . The editor was Friedrich Blume .

Individual articles were also published in an expanded form as a paperback under the name MGG Prisma .

The second, completely revised edition, edited by Ludwig Finscher , is a joint project by Bärenreiter-Verlag in Kassel and JB Metzler in Stuttgart . It consists of a ten-volume subject part (incl. Register volume; 1994–1999; over 1500 articles) and a 17-volume personal part (1999–2007; 18,000 articles) plus register (2007) and supplement (2008).

The content of the second edition, which is continuously updated, has been available since November 2016 in the fee-based database "MGG Online" (www.mgg-online.de), which is available from Bärenreiter-Verlag, Verlag JB Metzler and RILM (New York) operate together.
