The Direct Publishing GmbH is a publisher who primarily humanities published text collections electronically. He was in Berlin from 1995 to 2008 and has been based in Brașov , Romania, since the end of 2008 .

history

The publishing house was founded in January 1995 by the two managing directors Ralf Szymanski and Erwin Jurschitza as well as Michael Bartos, Joaquim Moreira Dos Santos and Konstantin Kryschanowski in Berlin. The company headquarters was initially at Yorckstraße 59.

In 2001 the sister company The Yorck Project - Gesellschaft für Bildarchivierung mbH was founded. Both companies later moved to the Ernst Gettke House at Möckernstrasse 68. The Yorck Project became the Zenodot Publishing Company in 2005 , the name of which refers to Zenodotus of Ephesus , the first librarian of the Alexandria library .

In October 2008 Directmedia was defeated in a copyright litigation against Ulrich Knoop and the University of Freiburg before the European Court of Justice and in August 2009 in the main case before the Federal Court of Justice .

After the sale of the publishing house by the two partners Erwin Jurschitza and Ralf Szymanski, the company's headquarters were relocated to Brașov ( Romania ) at the end of 2008 and the management was transferred to Claudia Maria Buflea. Sales in Germany have since been carried out by Versand-AS GmbH in Berlin. No reasons were made public when the publisher was sold.

Products

In cooperation with Reclam-Verlag Stuttgart, Directmedia Publishing developed the Reclam Klassiker series on CD-ROM , in which individual works from the German literary canon were published in electronic full text with the corresponding audio text.

The main focus of the publishing program, with the series “ Digital Library ”, is in the field of humanities text collections and lexicons . Since 1997, appeared about 200 CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs , all with the software "Digibib" under Windows and Mac OS X to run. A beta version of the reader has also been available for Linux GPL -licensed since March 2005 .

From autumn 2004 to autumn 2007 the company published an offline version of Wikipedia on CD-ROM and DVD. The first Wikipedia CD-ROM was published in October 2004 as a special volume in the digital library . The following editions were taken care of by the sister company Zenodot Verlagsgesellschaft .

The Zenodot Verlagsgesellschaft founded the online library Zeno.org in 2007 , which is no longer part of the publisher.

Software: Reader

Separate software (“Reader”) for PC and a significantly reduced software for Mac (OS X 10.3.9+) have been developed for these titles. Since the company's website has been closed and an email address no longer exists, the reader can only be obtained directly from the company by post.
