Diego García Corrales (born October 12, 1961 in Azkoitia , † March 31, 2001 in Azpeitia ) was a Spanish marathon runner .

In 1989 he was fourth in the San Sebastian Marathon . In 1991 he came in 23rd at the IAAF World Cup marathon held as part of the London Marathon and 14th at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo .

The following year he was ninth at the Olympic Games in Barcelona and third at the Fukuoka Marathon . In 1993 he was tenth in the World Cup held as part of the San Sebastián Marathon.

At the European Athletics Championships in 1994 he was part of the all-Spanish podium as a silver medalist: Martín Fiz won gold, Alberto Juzdado won bronze . In 1995 he first won the Seville Marathon and then finished sixth at the World Championships in Gothenburg and fourth in Fukuoka.

A 53rd place at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta was followed by another fourth place in Fukuoka. In 1998 he finished seventh at the London and Berlin marathons , and second in San Sebastián in 1999.

In the last year of his career, he finished second in the Seoul International Marathon and the Amsterdam Marathon in 2000 .

Shortly after retiring from competitive sports, he died of sudden cardiac death while training . A statue was erected in his honor at the place of death in the immediate vicinity of the Sanctuario de Loyola , and the Media Maratón Azkoitia-Azpeitia half marathon , which took place between his place of birth and his home, was given the title of Memorial Diego García.
