The Seville Marathon ( Spanish Maratón Ciudad de Sevilla ) is one of the oldest and most popular marathons in Spain . It has been organized by the City of Seville Sports Department since 1985 .
So far, the Spanish championships have been held three times as part of the Seville Marathon: In 1987 and 1994 Vicente Antón and María Luisa Irízar or José Apalanza and Ana Isabel Alonso took the title as overall winners, in 2009 Rafael Iglesias as overall third in 2:11:51 h and María Jesús Gestido as fourth overall in 2:40:26 h.
route
The start and finish used to be in the Seville Olympic Stadium , the venue for the 1999 World Athletics Championships . For reasons of capacity, the start has been in front of the stadium since 2013.
Since 2013, the route has initially led about 5 km south through the districts of Triana and Los Remedios. The Guadalquivir is crossed via the Puente de los Remedios. Via the Paseo de Cristobal Colon and the Calle Torneo, near the water, you head back north to the Ronda Urbana Norte, which is reached after 10 km. The Poligono Norte district will circulate on Avenida Alcalde Manuel del Valle. On the Avenida de Llanes it goes back towards La Macarena. There are a few loops east of the city center, in which, among other things, the Santa Justa train station (km 19) and the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán of Sevilla FC (km 26) are passed. The route leads further and further south until the southernmost point of the route is reached at the Estadio Benito Villamarín of the Betis Sevilla club. Now it goes on the Avenida la Palmera and the Paseo de las Delicias to the Parque de Maria Luisa. After a short loop through the park, it goes to the Plaza de España (km 33), which is circled once. We continue to the north past the former tobacco factory, the cathedral and the Plaza Nueva over the Alameda de Hercules over the Barqueta bridge (km 39) back to the so-called island of La Cartuja . After a loop through the Parque del Alamillo , it goes to the finish in the Olympic Stadium.
The marathon advertises to have the flattest profile in Europe, the difference between the lowest and the highest point of the route is less than 20 m.
