Alexander the Great Marathon

The Alexander the Great Marathon ( Greek Διεθνής Μαραθώνιος "Μέγας Αλέξανδρος" ; English name International Marathon "Alexander The Great" ) is a marathon that has been taking place since 2006 between Pella , the birthplace of Alexander the Great , and Thessaloniki . It thus connects the capital of ancient Macedonia with that of today's Greek region of Macedonia . The race is organized by MEAS Triton Thessaloniki. The program of the event also includes a 5 and a 10 km run.

route

The start is in the main square of Pella in front of the Alexander statue. After one kilometer you reach the national road 2 , which you follow via Chalkidona and Agios Athanasios , where half of the route is covered, to Eleftherio-Kordelio . On the Odos Monastiriou, Menemeni is crossed and the city center of Thessaloniki is headed for. At 38 km you pass the train station, and one kilometer later you turn into Odos Dodekanisou at Platia Dimokratias, which leads to the area of ​​the port. On the Leoforos Nikis embankment , you will pass the Platia Aristotelous and the White Tower before arriving at the destination at the Alexander monument. The net gradient between start and finish is just under 40 meters in altitude .

The 5 and 10 km runs essentially follow the last part of the marathon route.
