The Beirut Marathon (BLOM) is a marathon that has been taking place in Beirut since 2003 . It is organized by the Beirut Marathon Association , a non- governmental non-profit organization . The program also includes a ten-kilometer run and races for wheelchair users over the marathon distance and over ten kilometers. The run usually takes place in November.
history
The run was initiated by May El-Khalil , who achieved her goal of running a marathon in Beirut despite being run over by a minibus while training and seriously injured. Until today she is the head of organization. The founder received the Laureus Sport for Good Award in 2011 .
In 2006 the run was postponed for a week after the assassination attempt on Pierre Gemayel junior . In 2010 there was a three-kilometer race for parliamentarians in which representatives of rival parties participated, and Prime Minister Saad Hariri started over ten kilometers. 35 ambassadors from different countries and members of the UN troops also took part in the run. Hussein Awadah set a Lebanese record in seventh place with 2:20:31 h.
Since 2014 the marathon in Beirut has been run under the IAAF Silver Label Road Races .
route
The start has been on Wafic-Sinno-Strasse since 2011. First it goes on the Paris Avenue along the Mediterranean Sea to the western part of the city, then over the Saeb Salam Boulevard to the racecourse, where a loop is completed south. You return to the racecourse east of Horch Park. In a zigzag course it goes northeast to the suburb of Bourj Hammoud . An eastward turning point stretch connects parallel to the coast. In Antelias , at km 33, you turn around and follow the coast westwards to your destination on Martyrs' Square.
The route is flat, but many runners are troubled by the humid heat, which is why the start is scheduled at 7 a.m.
