Rome Marathon 2006

The Rome Marathon (Italian: Maratona della Città di Roma ) is a marathon that has been held in Rome on a Sunday in March since 1995 . It is the marathon competition with the most participants in Italy and, with over 10,000 finishers, is one of the ten largest marathons in Europe (e.g. 2009: 11,025 marathon runners at the finish, 9293 men and 1732 women). The program also includes the Stracittadina Fun Run over 4 km without time measurement with over 40,000 participants, which starts shortly after the marathon.

route

The route starts and ends at the Roman Forum north of the Palatine . First it goes to the Piazza Venezia below the Monumento Vittorio Emanuele II , then west of the Capitol to the Marcellus Theater and the Circus Maximus . Passing the Cestius pyramid , the southernmost point of the route is reached at km 6 at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls . Shortly afterwards you cross the Tiber , whose course you now follow upstream, first on the right bank, then on the left up to the level of the Castel Sant'Angelo . Behind this you turn west over the Ponte Cavour and the Piazza Cavour and walk over the Via della Conciliazione towards St. Peter's Basilica . At the colonnades that border St. Peter's Square , the route swings to the north, parallel to the border of the territory of Vatican City . The route now returns to the Tiber in an arc. Shortly after the half marathon mark you pass the Stadio Olimpico and the Milvian Bridge . At the northernmost point of the route, you change over the Ponte Tor di Quinto to the left bank of the Tiber, which you follow downstream from Rome after an arch around the mosque. The last fifth of the route then leads through the old town. Via the Piazza Navona and the Piazza del Popolo , past the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain , you get to the Piazza Venezia, walk to the Circus Maximus again as at the beginning of the race. It now goes around the Colosseum in an arc into the home straight on Via dei Fori Imperiali.

history

The Rome Marathon follows the tradition of the 1960 Summer Olympics , at which Abebe Bikila won the first marathon gold medal for sub-Saharan Africa barefoot and in world record time, and the World Athletics Championships in 1987 , where Douglas Wakiihuri and Rosa Mota covered the 42.195 km distance triumphed.

Today's event has two antecedents: a city marathon, which ran from 1982 to 1991, and another marathon called the Romacapitale Marathon, which ran in November from 1988 to 1990. In 1985 the European Cup Marathon was held as part of the Rome Marathon , won by the two Germans Michael Heilmann (2:11:28) and Katrin Dörre (2:30:11).

The later Olympic marathon champions Fatuma Roba and Stefano Baldini celebrated their first major victories on the marathon route in Rome.

In 2000, on the occasion of the jubilee year, the marathon took place on New Years Day. The start was moved to St. Peter's Square and John Paul II blessed the runners.

Since 2004 there has been an evaluation for hand bikers and wheelchair users .

In 2007, prize money equivalent to approximately US $ 61,000 each was paid out to the best men and women.
