The Olympic Stadium Rome ( Italian Stadio Olimpico , officially Stadio Olimpico di Roma , sometimes just called Olimpico for short ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Italian capital of Rome , which is also used for rugby games. The capacity is more than 72,000 spectators. The stadium was built from 1927 and was intended as an Olympic stadium for the planned Summer Olympics in 1940 , which were awarded after the withdrawal of the application to Tokyo. At the 1960 Summer Olympics , the athletics competitions as well as the opening and closing ceremonies took place here.

Since 1953, the Olympic Stadium has served as the home ground for the two football clubs AS Roma and Lazio Rome .

history

It was built under the name Stadio dei Cipressi from 1927 to 1932 by the architect Enrico Del Debbio as part of the Foro Mussolini (now Foro Italico ). The first major expansion took place by 1937 under the architect Luigi Walter Moretti . This expansion was intended to support Rome's application for the 1940 Summer Olympics . In the 1950s Carlo Roccatelli and, after his death in 1951, Annibale Vitellozzi carried out the conversion for the Olympic application . From 1953 to 1960 the stadium was called Stadio dei Centomila . After Rome was awarded the contract, Vitellozzi carried out further alterations. In 1960 it was reopened at the Summer Olympics .

Another major renovation took place between the World Athletics Championships in 1987 and the World Cup in 1990 . The main architect was again Annibale Vitellozzi.

It has been the home of the soccer clubs Lazio Rome and AS Roma since 1953 and has been able to seat 72,698 spectators since the last renovation in 2008, after having had a capacity of 82,656.

In the Olympic Stadium, the German national soccer team became European champions in 1980 with a 2-1 victory over Belgium and in 1990 world champions with a 1-0 victory in the final against Argentina .

Since 2008, the Olympic Stadium has been the final venue in the Italian soccer cup competition Coppa Italia .

Games at the 1990 World Cup

At the 1990 World Cup in Italy , the Olympic Stadium was the venue for a total of six games; more games were played in no other stadium in the tournament. In addition to the final, three preliminary round matches as well as a round of 16 and quarter-finals took place here.

New construction of the Stadio della Roma

Plans for a new stadium under the working title Stadio della Roma have been public since spring 2014 . AS Roma had presented the plans for a new arena that can seat 52,000 spectators and should originally have been completed by the start of the 2016/17 season. The American architect Dan Meis reveals that the Stadio della Roma should be reminiscent of the Colosseum . The new mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi , announced that the local council should have decided in July 2016 on the start of the approval process. The new stadium is to be built in the southern district of Tor di Valle. The plan also includes extensive urban redesigns and a new motorway slip road to the Autostrada Roma - Fiumicino .
