Complete medal table

The 6th  European Athletics Championships took place from 19 to 24 August 1958 in the Swedish capital Stockholm . With the exception of the marathon and the walking competitions , the competitions were held in the Olympic Stadium in 1912 .

Competitions

There were two changes in the range of competitions compared to the European Athletics Championships in 1954 . For men, instead of walking 10 km on the street, the now common 20 km street walk was part of the program. For the women, there was another running route with the 400-meter run . This discipline was part of the competition program for the first time at international championships.

Attendees

For the first time, the GDR was able to take part in European championships within a so-called joint German team. In numerous publications, the two German teams are listed as two different nations in the summary of results and also in the medal table (BR Germany / GDR). However, this is not factually correct, as B. At the Olympic Games in 1960 and 1964 there was an all-German team. The athletes are officially correctly listed under the common national name 'Germany'.

Athletic performance

The Soviet Union was very successful again with eleven EM titles . However, the gap to the following nations was not as great as four years earlier at the last European Championships in Bern . Behind the USSR came Poland - eight titles - Great Britain - seven - and Germany - six titles.

With numerous other championship records, the performances at these championships were again at a high level despite mostly cool and rainy conditions.

European surprise champion Armin Hary ( photo right )

Officially, the hand-stopped value of 10.4 s entered the list of results for the winner Armin Hary. With this, Hary set the European championship record from 1938 held by the Italian Orazio Mariani and the Dutchman Wil van Beveren , as did the second and third placed Manfred Germar and Peter Radford. Hary's winning time from the final, electronically stopped with 10.35 s, is unofficial as a new championship record.

The points table from 1952 was used for scoring.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved in 1985 according to the current rating system are also listed for comparison. There would have been some deviations in the placements afterwards:

  • Walter Meier in third and Uno Palu in second / Eef Kamerbeek in sixth and Walter Tschudi in fifth / Vaclav Becvarovsky in eighth and Hans-Dieter Möhring in seventh should have swapped places.
  • Shifts would also have been necessary in the ranks behind.

But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

The scoring was based on the 1955 points table.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved for the heptathlon according to the current rating system from 1985 are listed for comparison . With regard to the placements, there would have been some shifts afterwards:

  • Seventh-placed Mary Rand would be fourth.
  • Sixth-placed Maria Bibro would be fifth.
  • The fourth-placed Dinie Hobers would be sixth.
  • The fifth placed Olga Davidová would be seventh.

But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
