The German hurdlers won two medals in this competition, silver and bronze. European champion was Galina Bystrowa from the Soviet Union. She won ahead of the German world record holder Zenta Kopp . Bronze went to the Olympic runner-up in 1956, Gisela Birkemeyer , former Gisela Köhler, from the GDR.

Record setting / improvement
The existing EM record was equalized once and improved once at these European championships.
- Record equalization: 11.0 s - Zenta Kopp , 3rd lead on August 20th
- Record improvement: 10.7 s - Galina Bystrowa , 1st semi-final on August 21
The new EM record holder was the European champion Galina Bystrowa with 10.7 seconds.
Preliminary round
August 20, 1958, 5:35 p.m.
The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals.
It is hardly understandable what the organizers thought with this preliminary division. Of the fourteen starters, only two were eliminated. In two preliminary runs, the participants were automatically qualified for the next round if they only reached the finish. Alternatively, it would have been possible without any problems to schedule the qualification races in such a way that the semi-finals are omitted - for example with three preliminary runs from which the first two would have qualified for the final. This would have created a real competitive situation right from the start.
