Preliminary round

August 20, 1958, 5:35 p.m.

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals.

It is hardly understandable what the organizers thought with this preliminary division. Of the fourteen starters, only two were eliminated. In two preliminary runs, the participants were automatically qualified for the next round if they only reached the finish. Alternatively, it would have been possible without any problems to schedule the qualification races in such a way that the semi-finals are omitted - for example with three preliminary runs from which the first two would have qualified for the final. This would have created a real competitive situation right from the start.
