Galina Petrovna Bystrowa ( Russian Галина Петровна Быстрова ; born February 8, 1934 in Nakhichevan ; † October 11, 1999 ; born Galina Dolschenkowa ) was a Soviet athlete . With a height of 1.70 m, her competition weight was 65 kg.

Galina Bystrowa won three European championship titles, one in the 80-meter hurdles and two in the pentathlon .

Career

After becoming the Soviet champion in the 80 meter hurdles under her maiden name Dolschenkowa in 1955 , she started as Galina Bystrowa in 1956. In 1956 she was third in the Soviet championship. At the Olympic Games in Melbourne, she was Olympic gold medalist in 11.0 s while tied to third place, the Australian Norma Thrower .

In 1957, 1958 and 1959 Galina Bystrowa became the Soviet hurdler champion, in 1957 and 1958 she also won the pentathlon championship. At the European Championships in Stockholm in 1958 , she first won the pentathlon with 4733 points (4215 points according to today's scoring) ahead of her compatriot Nina Winogradowa with 4627 points (4112) and the German Edeltraud Eiberle with 4545 points (4076). One day after the final in the pentathlon, she also won the hurdle sprint title in 10.9 seconds ahead of the two Germans Zenta Kopp (West) in 10.9 seconds and Gisela Birkemeyer (East) in 11.0 seconds.

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Galina Bystrowa finished fifth in the hurdles sprint in 11.2 seconds. Two years later at the European Championships in Belgrade, she only finished sixth over the 80 meter hurdles in 10.8 seconds. In the pentathlon, however, she was able to successfully defend her title. She won with 4833 points (4312) in front of the French Denise Guénard with 4735 points (4223) and the German Helga Hoffmann with 4676 points (4170). Behind them were the Olympic champions 1968 Ingrid Becker and 1972 Mary Peters in fourth and fifth .

At the Olympic premiere of the women's pentathlon in 1964 in Tokyo , the Soviet champion Irina Press won ahead of the British Mary Rand . Galina Bystrowa took third place ahead of Mary Peters. So Bystrowa won her only Olympic medal on her third Olympic participation.

In international championships Galina Bystrowa did not appear afterwards, although she was still third in the Soviet championship in the pentathlon in 1968.
