Denise Guénard

Denise Guénard , née Laborie, (born January 13, 1934 in Saint-Maurice , Département Val-de-Marne , † May 23, 2017 ) was a French athlete .

Life

Denise Guénard was characterized by her athletic versatility. Between 1953 and 1968 she was French champion 20 times in a total of five different disciplines. She has been called up to the French national team 47 times. She started as a hurdler, sprinter, high and long jumper, discus thrower and all-rounder and was also used in the sprint relay.

Guénard's greatest success is the silver medal in the pentathlon at the European Athletics Championships in 1962 in Belgrade . With 4735 points she won silver behind the Soviet winner Galina Bystrowa and ahead of the German Helga Hoffmann . There are also two further finals. In 1954 in Bern she was fourth in the 80-meter hurdles , and in 1966 in Budapest again eighth in the pentathlon.

Their 20 national titles are divided as follows: nine championship titles in pentathlon (1953, 1954, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968), six titles in the 80-meter hurdles (1954, 1955, 1960, 1961 , 1962 and 1965), two titles in high jump (1953 and 1964), two titles in long jump (1965 and 1966) and one title in discus throw (1959).

Denise Guénard took part in three Olympic Games. At the Helsinki Games in 1952 , she failed in the 100-meter run in the preliminary round. She also failed in the sprint relay in the run-up. In 1960 in Rome , she made it to the semi-finals in the 80-meter hurdles. She was more successful in Tokyo in 1964 . Here she reached the final with the sprint relay, in which she finished 8th. In the pentathlon, she finished 12th in the final score.
