Complete medal table

The 5th  European Athletics Championships took place from 25 to 29 August 1954 in Bern , Switzerland . With the exception of the marathon and the walking competitions , the competitions were held in the Neufeld stadium.

Attendees

Only athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany participated from divided Germany .

Competitions

The women's discipline was also expanded this time: For the first time after the Olympic Games in 1928 , the 800-meter run was once again a middle-distance competition in international championships.

Athletic performance

By far the most successful nation was the Soviet Union with eleven EM titles. Among women, only three out of eleven disciplines - high jump , long jump and javelin throw - were won by non-Soviet athletes. In the national rankings followed Czechoslovakia and Hungary with four gold medals.

There were also numerous other championship records. These European championships were at a very high level for the conditions at the time.

The scoring was based on a point table valid from 1952 to 1954.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved for the heptathlon according to the current rating system from 1985 are listed for comparison . With regard to the placements, there would have been a shift afterwards:
the fifth-placed Sofja Burdulenko and the sixth-placed Maria Ilwicka would have had to swap places.

But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
