Leonid Wolodymyrowytsch Bartenjew ( Ukrainian Леоні́д Володи́мирович Барте́нєв , English transcription Leonid Vladimirovich Bartenev ; born October 10, 1933 in Poltava ) is a former Ukrainian athlete who competed for the Soviet Union . The 1.74 m tall and 70 kg heavy sprinter was particularly successful internationally as a relay runner.
Bartenjew celebrated his first medal success at the European Athletics Championships in 1954 in Bern, where he finished third in the Soviet 4 x 100 meter relay behind the teams from Hungary and the United Kingdom. At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he was used as the starting runner in the relay and won the silver medal behind the US runners. He also took part in the 100-meter run and the 200-meter run , but was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
At the European Athletics Championships in Stockholm in 1958 , Bartenjew finished third in the relay as he had done four years earlier in Bern, this time behind the relay from Germany and the United Kingdom. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 , he repeated the previous placement with the relay, now running in second position, and won another silver medal behind the all-German team . In the 200-meter run, he did not make it through the quarter-finals again.
