The 4th  European Athletics Championships took place from 23 to 27 August 1950 in the Belgian capital, Brussels . With the exception of the marathon and the 50 km walk , the competitions were held in the Heysel Stadium .

Attendees

As in 1946 , a German team was excluded from participation - for the last time - after the Second World War .

Competitions

With the pentathlon , an all-around event was included for the first time in the competition program for women .

Athletic performance

The undisputed star of the event was Fanny Blankers-Koen from the Netherlands ; she won three gold medals ( 100 meters , 200 meters , 80 meter hurdles ) and one silver medal ( 4 x 100 meter relay ).

The most successful nation was Great Britain with eight European Championship titles. The Soviet Union followed with six gold medals. Behind them were France and the Netherlands , each with four victorious athletes, with France having significantly more silver and bronze medals than the Netherlands.

The scoring was based on the 1934 points table.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved in 1985 according to the current rating system are also listed for comparison. There would have been some deviations in the placements afterwards:

  • Sixth-placed Vladimir Volkov would be fifth.
  • The eighth-placed Miloslav Moravec would be sixth.
  • The fifth-placed Armin Scheurer would be seventh.
  • Seventh-placed Edward Adamczyk would be eighth.
  • In the stands behind, the athletes in stands eleven and twelve should have swapped their places.

But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

The scoring was based on a point table from 1950.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved for the heptathlon in 1980 according to the current rating system are also listed. With regard to the placements, there would have been a shift:
The seventh-placed Klawdija Totschonowa and the eighth-placed Ivanka Knez would have had to swap places.

But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
