4 x 400 meter relay

Scrum when changing a 4 x 400 meter relay race

The 4 x 400 meter relay race (short: 4 × 400 m relay , English 4 × 400 meters relay ) is an Olympic competition in athletics , in which four runners (the relay ) each run a stadium lap of 400 meters one after the other to run. A stick has to be brought to the finish line and handed over to the next runner. The total time when the fourth runner crosses the finish line is rated. The 4 x 400 meter relay race has been part of the Olympic program for men since 1912 and for women since 1972 . At major championships, the 4 x 400 meter relay race is often the last competition.

As in the 400-meter run, the first runner starts with a low start from the starting blocks and offset to compensate for the curve. The first lap and the first 100 meters of the second lap are to be run in lanes, after which all runners are allowed to swivel to the inner lane. If no more than four teams are participating, it is permissible to run in lanes only for the first 100 meters.

The space of ten meters in front of and behind the finish line is provided for the change between the runners.

The second runner starts to compensate for the curve, offset from the same sequence mark as in the 800-meter run . When changing from the second to the third and from the third to the fourth runner, the runners taking over line up in the order in which their team has reached the 200 meter point of the stadium lap. You must also keep this position if the sequence changes afterwards up to the handover.

In large competitions with elimination rounds, up to two of the runners may be exchanged. Replaced runners are no longer allowed to run in the relay in later rounds.

The procedures for outdoor competitions are specified in rule 170 and for indoor competitions in rule 217 of the technical regulations of the International Athletics Federation IAAF .

history

The first relay races for track and field athletes took place around 1880 in the USA, based on the model of competitions between firefighters who ran 300 meters and handed over a pennant. The pennant was replaced with a wooden stick one foot long (30.48 cm).

At the Olympic Games in 1908 , the Olympic relay was initially included in the program, in which two 200 meters and one 400 and 800 meters each had to be run. The track lengths of 4 by 100 meters and 4 by 400 meters, which are customary to the present day, were introduced at the Olympic Games in 1912 .

Since 1963, the accepting runner has been allowed to run ten meters from the finish line.

The earliest recorded best on the 4 by 440 yards (4 × 402.34 m) course was from a team from Princeton University ( United States ). This ran on May 13, 1893 in Philadelphia for a time of 3:34 min 1/5 s ( John Chapman , George McCampbell , Irving Brokaw , Theodore Turner ). United StatesUnited States

Only once, when Jamaica set a world record in 1952, was the best performance not owned by US athletes.

With over 23 years of existence, the 2: 56.1 min of the USA Olympic relay on October 1, 1968, was one of the longest-lasting world records in track and field history. It was only surpassed on August 8, 1992.

The US relay world record, which was run at the Goodwill Games on July 22, 1998 , was subsequently revoked due to Antonio Pettigrew's confession of doping .

Eleven of the twelve world records (on meter courses) were run at the Olympic Games (as of 2007).

While 3-by-800-meter runs have been recorded in the statistics since 1927, relay runs on the 400-meter course were not recorded until the 1950s.

In 1969, in the first year of official registration, seven world records were set in the 4-by-400-meter run. Two other world bests in the same year were not recognized as world records because athletes from several countries ran each: On June 15, a Scandinavian season 3 reached 42.7 minutes (0.5 seconds below the world record). On July 30, a European relay in an international match against the United States in Stuttgart was 1.4 seconds below the existing world record in 3: 32.8 minutes. United StatesUnited States

In 1971 a GDR team set a world record for the first time, and from then until 1988 the GDR had the best performance. These include the only two world records with the same number of squadrons (September 9 and 10, 1972).

Two runners in this GDR relay, Helga Seidler and Monika Zehrt , achieved the rare success of being involved in four relay world records (August 15, 1971 to September 10, 1972).
