Earl Young

Earl Young ( Earl Verdelle Young ; born February 14, 1941 in San Fernando , California ) is a retired American athlete and Olympic champion .

In 1960, the 1.90 m tall Young qualified in 46.4 s in the 400-meter run behind Jack Yerman for the Olympic Games. On August 12, 1960 at the Olympic test in Walnut, Eddie Southern , Young, Otis Davis and Yerman ran a world record of 4 times 440 yards in 3: 05.6 minutes.

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , Earl Young reached the 400 meter final and was sixth in 45.9 s. The 4 x 400 meter relay with the cast Jack Yerman, Earl Young, Glenn Davis and Otis Davis won gold before the relay from Germany. Both seasons stayed under the old world record for over a second. The new world record of the US season of 3: 02.2 min was beaten four years later in the finals of the Olympic Games in Tokyo .

At the Pan American Games in São Paulo in 1963 , Young won gold with both the 4-by-100-meter relay and the 4-by-400-meter relay.
