Tony McQuay (born April 16, 1990 in West Palm Beach , Florida ) is an American athlete who specializes in the 400-meter run .
Life
youth
McQuay attended Suncoast Community High School in Riviera Beach, Florida , a neighboring town to his native West Palm Beach. As a representative of his school, he won the 400-meter distance at the Florida High School Championships. He also trained the other two sprint courses, 100 and 200 meters, and played in the high school American football club. Since 2010 he has been studying at the University of Florida in Gainesville .
Career
He was able to further improve his best performances in 2010, over 200 meters to 20.64 s and over 400 meters with 45.37 s. He took part in the championships of the college associations NCAA and SEC and was even able to win bronze at the NCAA Indoors over the 400-meter course.
In 2011 he first won both the 200 and 400 meters at the SEC Indoors. The big surprise came at the US championships. He won in 44.68 s, defeating Jeremy Wariner and Greg Nixon , and so qualified for the World Championships in Daegu . There he retired with 46.76 s in the heats.
In the next year, in addition to titles in the hall, he also had a double success at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. With a personal best of 44.58 s, he won the 400-meter race and also the relay competition with the Florida relay team. In the US Trials , he qualified second for the Olympic Games in London . Shortly before the Olympics, he not only started for the first time at a Diamond League meeting, but also for the first time in Europe: In London he finished third with 45.00 s. The Olympic Games failed with 45.31 s in the semi-finals. With the US season he won the silver medal behind the Bahamas.
At the start of the season on April 5, 2013, he was able to increase his 100-meter best time to 10.22 seconds. After starting in Kingston, New York and Eugene , the national championships were on June 22, where he wanted to qualify for the World Championships in Moscow . With 44.74 seconds he was second behind LaShawn Merritt and was therefore also a member of the 4 x 400 meter relay. Before the World Championships, he played two more competitions in Paris and London, where he was in good shape for the season highlight with 44.84 s and 45.09 s. At the World Championships he won silver on August 13 with a new personal best of 44.40 s before winning the gold medal in the relay competition on August 18, together with Verbug, Hall and Merritt . He was able to repeat this success at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing .
