The University of Florida is a public university in Gainesville in the US state of Florida . It is equipped with 49,693 students the fifth largest university in the United States (2006) and has the eighth-largest budget, almost 1.9 billion dollars a year. It is one of the best public universities in the United States, a so-called Public Ivy, and is a member of the Association of American Universities , an association of leading research-intensive North American universities that has existed since 1900. The university was rated 47th in the 2007 US News & World Report National Universities. In an international comparison by Jiaotong University Shanghai , the University of Florida achieved 53rd place in 2006.

history

The university was founded in 1905. Officially, the year 1853 is given as the year in which the East Florida Seminary was founded. This institution was closed during the Civil War , and its name was later used by various other educational institutions.

African American students have been admitted since 1958.

In 1991, following a donation of $ 20 million from George Smathers , the name of the university library was changed to George A. Smathers Library .
