David Mark Eckstein (born January 20, 1975 in Sanford , Florida ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball . Most recently he played for the San Diego Padres .

He made his debut on April 3, 2001 with the Los Angeles Angels . Eckstein played for the so-called "Halos" until the 2004 season. In 2002 he won the 2002 Angels World Series against the San Francisco Giants .

From 2005 Eckstein was active for the traditional club from the city of Gateway Arch , the St. Louis Cardinals . In 2006 he was able to win the World Series again and was even elected MVP of the World Series .

In the 2008 season Eckstein moved to the Toronto Blue Jays . On August 31, 2008, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league pitcher Chad Beck .

On January 15, 2009, he signed a one-year contract with the San Diego Padres, on the condition that he would play primarily as a second baseman . On August 22, 2009, he extended it for another year. He fulfilled his contract and played the last game of his career on October 3, 2010.

Eckstein was valued by US experts because of his "fighting spirit" and his outstanding skills as a lead-off hitter (few strikeouts + many bases on balls). He also played a solid ball on the defensive as a shortstop.
