Alexander Emmanuel Rodríguez , nickname A-Rod , (born July 27, 1975 in New York City , New York ) is a former American baseball player of Dominican descent in Major League Baseball (MLB) and is considered one of the best baseball players of his generation. In November 2009 he won the World Series with the New York Yankees .

Career

A native of United States, Rodríguez is a citizen of the United States and Dominican. His family moved back to the Dominican Republic with him when he was four years old. Four years later they moved to Miami , Florida . There he played baseball at Westminster Christian High School. His talent was so impressive that he received an offer from the University of Miami . He declined on the grounds that he would never play college baseball .

Alex Rodríguez began his career with the Seattle Mariners in the minor leagues as a shortstop in 1993 and was inducted into the professional team in 1994. Between 1994 and 2000 he played for the Mariners, from 2001 to 2003 for the Texas Rangers . Since the 2004 season he played for the New York Yankees . In the Yankees he was first used in the position of 3rd baseman, later mainly as DH (Designated Hitter).

He finished the 1998 season with 42 home runs and 46 stolen bases , making him only the third player in the history of the MLB to move into the 40-40 club .

In 2001 he signed a contract with Texas Rangers for $ 252 million over 10 years (that's roughly $ 150,000 per game). This led to irritation among the fans of the Seattle Mariners, who from then on accompanied Rodríguez's performance in Seattle with loud whistles.

He played his first All Star Game in 1996 and was a regular in the AL All Star Team until 2008, but was not included in 2009.

His outstanding achievements are reflected in the number of home runs (after the resignation of Ken Griffey Jr. best performance of all active players, rank 7 in the all-time leaderboard) and at RBIs (rank 2 of all active players - rank 20 in the all-time leaderboard) . In addition, A-Rod is the active player with the most runs . He has also passed the milestone of 2500 hits (see info box).

On August 4, 2007, he hit his 500th home run at the age of 32 years and eight days, making him the youngest player to achieve this feat. He broke the record set by Jimmie Foxx in 1939, who was 32 years and 338 days old on his 500th home run. It took him 1855 games to break the record. Only two players made it faster: Mark McGwire (1639 games) and Babe Ruth (1740 games).

Exactly three years later, on August 4, 2010, he hit his 600th home run. At 35 years and eight days, he became the youngest player to do so. He broke the record set by Babe Ruth in 1931, who was 36 years and 196 days old on his 600th home run. However, A-Rod needed 2,227 games to reach the milestone, Babe Ruth only 2044. His greatest personal successes were the elections for MVP in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

On 13 December 2007 signed A-Rod a new 10-year contract with the New York Yankees, who guaranteed him income totaling 275 million US $. It was the highest-value contract in the history of Major League Baseball to date. Further bonuses in the millions would flow in if A-Rod should reach milestones, for example the record for most home runs. As a result, Rodriguez was the highest paid athlete in the world in 2011 with an annual salary of US $ 32 million, alongside Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao . His annual salary was surpassed in January 2014 by Clayton Kershaw's contract extension with the Los Angeles Dodgers (US $ 215 million for a 7-year contract).

In February 2009 Rodríguez put in an ESPN to interview, in the years 2001 to 2003, steroids doped to have.

In November 2009, he won the World Series for the first time in his career . During the entire postseason he was among the top five in every hitting statistic, and even in first and second place in RBIs and home runs.

Doping ban

On August 5, 2013, Rodríguez was banned from MLB boss Bud Selig for 211 games until the end of the 2014 season for illicit doping . He was one of the prime suspects in the Biogenesis baseball scandal . Twelve other players were banned for 50 games each. Rodríguez took the highest sentence due to his doping history with steroids. His lawyer announced legal action before the ban was announced, mainly due to the fact that Rodríguez was only convicted on circumstantial evidence and that there was no positive doping result. Rodríguez appealed and was allowed to play the 2013 season to the end.

On January 11, 2014, the legal dispute between Liga and Rodríguez reduced the original suspension from 211 games to 162 games, including the end of the 2014 season and the playoffs. Judge Fredric Horowitz, who acted as arbitrator in the legal dispute, saw it as proven that Rodríguez and twelve other professionals were treated with performance-enhancing agents in a Biogenesis anti-aging clinic in South Florida. During the investigation, the former head of the clinic, "Doctor" Anthony Bosch, testified that he had supplied Rodríguez with six banned substances, including testosterone, insulin and growth hormone. Alex Rodríguez announced a lawsuit against the professional league MLB and the players' union and wants to have what he sees as a "completely unjustified" ban. On his Facebook page he wrote: “I am confident that when a Federal Judge reviews the entirety of the record,…. that the judge will find that the panel blatantly disregarded the law and facts, and will overturn the suspension. "Later, the 38-year-old Rodríguez announced at a press conference in Mexico City, but rather accepting:" The league could even do me for 2014 did a favor, because I played through 20 years without a break. In 2014 I will recover mentally and physically prepare for a new chapter in my life. " Despite the ban, the drug rules in baseball allow Rodríguez to participate in spring training and play friendly matches.

On August 7, 2016, Alex Rodriguez announced the end of his career at a press conference. Rodriguez will play for the New York Yankees for the last time at the MLB home game on August 12 against the Tampa Bay Rays . The Yankees signed him as a consultant and youth coach until December 31, 2017.

In early July 2008 there were rumors that Rodríguez was having an affair with Madonna . On July 4, 2008, his wife, Cynthia, announced that she was seeking a divorce, which would end in September 2008.

During 2009, Rodríguez was dating actress Kate Hudson . From July 2010 to September 2011, he was in a relationship with actress Cameron Diaz . The baseball player has had a relationship with Jennifer Lopez since around February 2017 , with whom he became engaged in March 2019.
