David Richard Freese (born April 28, 1983 in Corpus Christi , Texas ) is an American baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball (MLB). Freese plays at third base ( "third baseman"), won with the St. Louis Cardinals the 2011 World Series and has won the World Series MVP Award awarded the final series. In the 2014 season he moved to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim , and since the 2018 season he has been active for the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
Career
Freese (pronounced "Friess") grew up in St. Louis and was a talented shortstop for the local baseball team, the Tigers, while he was in college at the University of Missouri . In the MLB Draft 2006 he was committed by the San Diego Padres in 273rd place, but completed only games in low-class farm teams . Before the start of the 2009 MLB season, he was transferred to the St. Louis Cardinals by multiple all-star Albert Pujols and played 17 games in which he posted three runs, ten hits and one home run with a batting average of .326. With the Cardinals he reached the Division Series (playoff quarterfinals) against the Los Angeles Dodgers , where St. Louis - without being used - was defeated 0-3. In 2010 Freese joined the extended regular team and, despite a foot injury, posted 70 games (28 runs, 71 hits, four home runs, 296). St. Louis was eliminated from the Division Series against the Dodgers, again without Freese being used.
In 2011 Freese experienced his breakthrough. After a mixed start to the season, the Cardinals made it into the playoffs by wildcard, but knocked out the Philadelphia Phillies in the Division Series and the Milwaukee Brewers in the Conference Finals. Playoff debutant Freese made three home runs straight away against the Phillies and a .545 batting average against the Brewers, hitting three home runs, seven own runs and nine batted in runs . For this he was voted Most Valuable Player of the League Championship Series.
In the 2011 World Series against the Texas Rangers , he beat a triple in Game 6 in the ninth inning at a score of 5-7 with two runners on the bases, but also two outs and two strikes, which saved the Cardinals in overtime. In the 11th inning he hit the home run with a score of 9-9. In Game 7 he hit a double in the 1st inning when the score was 0-2, which the Cardinals equalized: this was his 21st playoff RBI, which meant a new MLB record. St. Louis won their seventh game 6-2, and Freese became only the sixth player to be named MVP in both the World Series and the National League Finals that same year.
