The American League and National League winners were determined between September 30 and October 16, 2011. To this end, the three division winners and the best runner-up (so-called wild card) met each other in two division series matches in the best-of-five mode ( ALDS or NLDS = American or National League Division Series). However, internal divisional encounters are excluded. Then the winners of the Division Series matches played the best-of-seven from the respective league champion ( ALCS or NLCS = American or National League Championship Series ).
