The 1968 World Series was the 65th edition of the finals of Major League Baseball . The champions of the American League , the Detroit Tigers , and the champions of the National League , the St. Louis Cardinals , faced each other. The Best-Of-Seven series started on October 2 and ended on October 10, 1968. The winners after seven games were the Detroit Tigers 4-3, who were able to win their third World Series .
As the MVP of the series , Detroit pitcher Mickey Lolich was awarded three wins . It was also the last time a pitcher threw and won three complete games in a World Series .
