The 1969 World Series , the final of Major League Baseball , was played from October 11 to October 16, 1969. The champions of the American League , the Baltimore Orioles , and the champion of the National League , the New York Mets , faced each other. The best-of-seven series went to the New York franchise with 4 to 1 wins . The associated first World Series title of the Mets is considered one of the biggest sensations in professional baseball. Then and still today, baseball experts consider the Orioles team to be the best baseball team of all time at the time.
The more than surprising victory of the Queens team earned the 1969 team the nickname The Miracle Mets .
The way to the World Series
The 1969 season was the first ever in which the two major leagues were divided into two divisions.
For the New York Mets, the season was only the eighth since the team was founded in 1962. In the previous seven seasons, the club could never do better than 9th in the National League. Their success in the newly formed East Division was a small sensation . With a victory rate of 61.7%, the Mets relegated the Cubs to second place with 8 wins ahead. The clear 3-0 victory in the League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves was more than surprising. Despite the success, the Mets went into the World Series as a blatant underdog.
The Baltimore Orioles dominated the regular season of the American League . In their division they were able to beat the Detroit Tigers by 19 wins thanks to a more than outstanding victory rate of 67.3% . The Orioles also survived the League Championship Series with ease. The Minnesota Twins were beaten 3-0. Thanks to stars like Jim Palmer , Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson , winning the World Series seemed relatively clear.
