Lynn Nolan Ryan Jr. (born January 31, 1947 in Refugio , Texas ) is a retired American baseball player for the New York Mets , California Angels , Houston Astros and Texas Rangers in the MLB . Ryan played the position of pitcher and is known for his long and successful career, which lasted 27 years and in which he holds the all -time MLB records for strikeouts (5,714) and no-hitters (seven). He also won the World Series with the Mets in 1969 and was elected to the All-Star Team eight times. In 1999 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame with 98% of the vote . Ryan is currently President of the Texas Rangers. As a thank you for his achievements, the Angels, Astros and Rangers have withdrawn their jersey number 34 forever.

Ryan was famous for his extremely fast fastball, which regularly broke the "sound barrier" of 100 miles per hour and was called "Ryan's Express". His MLB records of 5,714 strikeouts and seven no-hitters speak for themselves. Critics also saw Ryan as a one-dimensional power pitcher because he is number one in the negative categories Walks Allowed (2,795) and Wild Pitches (277). Nevertheless, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 with 98.2% of all votes in the first ballot.
