The Texas Rangers are an American Major League - Baseball team. The team plays in the Western Division of the American League .
Founded in 1961 as Washington Senators , the team moved to Arlington , Texas , in 1972 , where it received its current name. The Texas Rangers have been playing at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington since 1994 . The Rangers remained relatively unsuccessful for a long time until they won the American League for the first time in 2010 and thus moved into the World Series for the first time .
history
1961–1971 (Washington Senators)
1961 saw the first major expansion of the MLB: Two new teams were added to the American League, so that from now on ten instead of eight franchises competed for the title. The team, previously based in Washington, DC , moved to Minneapolis that year and traded under the name Minnesota Twins . In order to keep a team from the capital in the American League, a new team (and with new management) was quickly founded under the "old" name.
Washington was not a good location for a major league baseball team before, as traditionally only a low audience could be achieved here. The "new" Senators didn't change anything about that, as there were no successes of any kind. In the founding year 1961 only a shared last place was achieved with 61 wins and 100 defeats, the following year a 60-101 record. After another last place, it went up in very small steps: 1964 penultimate, 1965 and 1966 third from last, 1967 a shared sixth place. The only season in Washington with a positive result was played in 1969 under manager newcomer Ted Williams with 86-76. However, with new franchise owner Bob Short unable to hold the team together under the debt burden of the 1968 purchase, the Senators reverted to old failure results. The sale of the team to Texas in 1971 was naturally not well received in Washington; the last game of the Senators ended ingloriously with a 9-0 defeat after the referee's decision.
Texas Rangers (since 1972)
It was not until 1977 that the Rangers were able to achieve a better result than in 1969. The most successful period for the Rangers began with an exclamation point in the 1994 strike season, when the West Division was headed at the start of the strike. Actual division titles were then won in 1996 and again in 1998 and 1999, but failed each year in the subsequent American League Division Series with a single win in 10 games in the postseason.
The Rangers was co-owner from 1988 to 1998 with a small stake by the 43rd US President , George W. Bush .
In 2010 the Rangers had their most successful year after a long dry spell. First, the West Division was won for the fourth time, then managed the Rangers for the first time a positive performance in the ALDS with a victory 3-2 over the Tampa Bay Rays . The change of star pitcher Cliff Lee , who was responsible for two of the victories as starting pitcher, was of particular importance.
On 22 October 2010, the Rangers won then the ALCS , and passed through a 6-1 over the New York Yankees in the sixth game (4-2 win in the series) for the first time in the World Series , where they the San Francisco Giants with 4-1 documents.
In 2011 the Rangers were able to win the AL West Division title for the second time in a row with a record of 96-66. With 3–1 wins against the Tampa Bay Rays , the Division Series was won and a 4–3 over the Detroit Tigers won the American League Championship title. However, as in the previous year, they could not win the World Series . This time the Rangers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3. They led in the series after the 5th game with 3–2, but lost the last 2nd games and thus the World Series 2011.

Current squad
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the number of players in the active squad at the beginning of the 2020 MLB season on 23/24. July increased to 30 players. Two weeks later there was a scheduled reduction to 28 players. Another two weeks later, the number of players is to be reduced to 26 and maintained for the entire 2020 season. In the case of double-headers , the teams may appoint a 27th player to the active squad.
