The Washington Nationals are an American founded in 1969 Baseball - franchise in the Eastern Division of the National League of Major League Baseball . Since moving from Montreal to Washington, DC in 2005, the Nationals have played their home games in Nationals Park .
history
The Expos de Montréal ( English. Montreal Expos) were founded after the world exhibition ( Expo ) in Montreal in 1967 and began playing in 1969. The Expos were the first MLB team to be based outside of the United States. The team played their home games at the Stade Olympique . There were no major sporting successes, and the audience participation was not convincing in the long run. The last owner Jeffry Loira (now owner of the Miami Marlins ) sold the rights to the franchise for US $ 120 million in 2002 directly to Major League Baseball .
In the 2003 season, some "home" games were played in the Estadio Hiram Bithorn on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico , which were better attended than those in Canada. The league finally announced in 2004 that it would move the franchise from the unprofitable Canadian market to the capital Washington DC, where professional baseball has not been played for over 30 years.
Such moves and renaming are not uncommon in the US professional sports leagues MLB , NFL , NBA and NHL . Professional baseball was played in the US capital Washington DC from 1901 to 1971, albeit with little success. These Washington Senators , also known semi-officially as Washington Nationals , became the Minnesota Twins in 1961 . After the Twins moved, the later Texas Rangers played as Washington Senators until 1971 .
2012 post season
In 2012, the post season was reached for the first time after the move. In the 8-0 win of the Division Series of Game 3 of the series, Edwin Jackson started as a pitcher, who pitched for the current opponent St. Louis Cardinals last year . It was only the third time a pitcher met his former team in the following year in the post season. Dwight Gooden for the Cleveland Indians in Game 4 of the ALCS in 1998 against the New York Yankees (1 Post Season Start 1997 for New York) and Woody Williams in 2005 for the San Diego Padres in Game 3 against the Cardinals (4 Post Season Starts for St. Louis 2004). The rookie Pete Kozma , who played as a shortstop , managed a 3-run home run in the 6th inning. Only 3 other shortstop rookies succeeded in the postseason: Chris Speier (1971 San Francisco Giants in the NLCS), Derek Jeter (1996 New York Yankees in the ALCS) and Troy Tulowitzki (2007 Colorado Rockies in the Division Series). In Game 4 in the 2-1 home win of the Nationals, both teams only had 3 hits each. Only for the 6th time in the post season did both teams have 3 or fewer hits. Last time on October 18, 2004 (Houston 3 hits, St. Louis 1 hit). Jayson Werth only achieved 5 home runs in the regular season. He beat the winning home run in the 9th inning to make it 2-2 in the NLDS Series. Only one other player who scored 5 or fewer home runs in the regular season was able to beat victory in a series where his own team is about to be eliminated. On October 10, 1981, George Vukovich of the Philadelphia Phillies hit the home run in the 10th inning against the Montreal Expos and leveled it 2-2. In the regular season he only scored a single homer. Only for the second time in the post-season history could the away team win each time (at least 5 games). Texas Rangers against Tampa Bay Rays in the 2010 ALDS. It only happened once in the NBA : New Jersey Nets against the Philadelphia 76ers in a best-of-five series in 1984 and never in the NHL . In the decisive Game 5, the Nationals got off to a furious start. Jayson Werth scored a double, Bryce Harper followed with a triple and then Ryan Zimmerman hit a home run to make it 3-0. A game with three or more consecutive extra base hits could only be started once in the post season. In 1992, the New York Mets got 4 doubles in a row in Game 4 of the NLCS against the Cardinals (hit by Timo Perez, Edgardo Alfonzo, Mike Piazza and Robin Ventura).
2019 World Series winners
For the first time in the club's history, the Washington Nationals are winners of the World Series. After defeating the Milwaukee Brewers in the wild card round, the team moved into the NLDS, where they beat the LA Dodgers 3-2 in "best of five" mode. In the NLCS they won in the "best of seven" mode 4-0 against the St. Louis Cardinals and thus moved into the World Series without losing a game. Things went well here at first and they won their first two away games against the Houston Astros. The following three games were played in Washington and they did not win a single home game, so the Astros took the lead 3-2. The two final games then took place again in Houston and they drew level in the sixth game (3: 3) before winning the World Series 4: 3 on October 30, 2019 in Houston with a 6: 2 win.
