Melbourne is a city in Brevard County in the US state of Florida with 76,068 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Melbourne lies on the Indian River , which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway , and on the Atlantic Ocean . The city is bordered by the towns of Palm Bay , West Melbourne , Melbourne Beach , Melbourne Village , Indialantic , Indian Harbor Beach , Satellite Beach, and Palm Shores . Titusville is around 50 km north and Orlando 100 km northwest. After Palm Bay, Melbourne is the second largest city in the county or the metropolitan area Palm Bay – Melbourne – Titusville.

history

Melbourne was founded after the end of the Civil War in 1867, mainly by former slaves under the name Crane Creek . In memory of Cornthwaite John Hector, the first postmaster of the city, the city was later renamed Melbourne since Hector most of his life in the Australian Melbourne spent.

In Melbourne there are currently 71 different churches from 21 different denominations, of which the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 17 churches. There are also 4 churches that do not belong to any denomination (status: 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 76,068 inhabitants were distributed among 38,955 households. The population density was 972.7 inh / km². 80.9% of the population identified themselves as whites , 10.3% as African-American , 0.3% as Indians and 3.1% as Asian Americans . 2.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.1% to several ethnic groups. 8.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010, children under the age of 18 lived in 23.5% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 32.5% of all households. 55.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.17 people and the average family size was 2.81 people.

21.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 26.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 43 years. 48.5% of the population were male and 51.5% were female.

The median annual income was $ 42,089, with 14.4% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 90.39% of the population, 4.70% spoke Spanish and 4.91% had another mother tongue.

Melbourne is known for its high concentration of companies in the high-tech sector. Within the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville metropolitan area , Melbourne has the third highest concentration of high-tech employees in the United States. Despite the manageable number of inhabitants, a disproportionately large number of large and high-tech companies, especially from the aerospace, electronics and defense technology sectors, have production and development locations in Melbourne, including:

Melbourne is crossed by Interstate 95 , US Highways 1 ( SR 5 ) and 192 ( SR 500 ) and Florida State Roads A1A , 507 , 508 and 513 . The Florida East Coast Railway also runs through the city. Melbourne has one airport, Melbourne International Airport .
