Melbourne Beach is a city in Brevard County in the US state of Florida with 3101 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Melbourne Beach is located on a barrier island on the central Atlantic coast of Florida, about 50 km south of Cape Canaveral . The city stretches from the Atlantic coast of the spit, which is only about one kilometer wide at this point, to the shore on the Indian River (an inlet that is part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway ).

Melbourne Beach has been connected to the city of Melbourne on the mainland since 1921 via the Melbourne Dam in the northern neighboring community of Indialantic . Other neighboring cities are Palm Bay and Melbourne .

history

Juan Ponce de León was probably the first European to see this area when he landed here in 1513. Melbourne Beach is Brevard County's oldest beach community; it was in 1883 by Cyrus E. Graves , a former officer of the Confederate founded.

At first the community tried to make a living from agriculture - especially pineapples and other tropical fruits - but gave up this attempt again in 1895 after severe frost damage.

From 1889 the construction of a bathing establishment, a pier and a small railway between the two coasts began to take care of tourism . At first, guests had to take a ferry - first a sailing boat, later a motor boat. With the construction of the dam in 1921, access to Melbourne Beach was made much easier.

In 1923 the municipality was officially recognized as a city.
