Cocoa [ ˈkoʊkoʊ ] is a city in Brevard County in the US state of Florida with 17,140 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Cocoa borders the city of Rockledge to the south and is located on the Intracoastal Waterway in close proximity to the Atlantic coast . The city is located approximately 20 km south of Titusville and 70 km east of Orlando .
Religions
In Cocoa there are currently 66 different churches from 18 different denominations. Among the churches belonging to a denomination, the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 15 churches. There are 19 churches that do not belong to any denomination (as of 2004).
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 17,140 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 8,603 households. The population density was 888.1 inh / km². 59.2% of the population identified themselves as whites, 31.3% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 1.1% as Asian Americans . 5.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.8% to several ethnic groups. 11.3% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 28.6% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 30.6% of all households. 59.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.36 people and the average family size was 2.96 people.
26.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 47.7% of the population were male and 52.3% were female.
The median annual income was $ 33,411, with 26.8% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 92.72% of the population, 5.03% spoke Spanish and 2.25% had another mother tongue.

Cocoa is crossed by Interstate 95 , US Highway 1 ( SR 5 ) and Florida State Roads 501 , 520 , 524 and 528 ( Martin Andersen Beachline Expressway ). The nearest airport is Melbourne International Airport (around 35 km away).

The crime rate in 2010 was 1096 points (US average: 266 points) in the very high range. There were two murders, 20 rapes, 75 robberies, 345 assaults, 474 break-ins, 892 thefts, 65 car thefts and four arson attacks.
