Kel-Tec is an American arms manufacturer and was founded in 1991 in Cocoa ( Florida ) as a mechanical engineering company under the name Kel-Tec CNC Industries Inc. In 1995 the production of pistols began. In the meantime, rifles are also manufactured for sport and service use.

The pistols are intended as so-called ' concealed carry ' and ' back up ' weapons, i.e. they should be worn concealed or as a secondary weapon . The target groups are police officers and gun license holders . They are particularly suitable as a secondary weapon to a Smith & Wesson pistol, as magazines can also be used for these weapons.

Kel-Tec offers its customers a lifetime guarantee, with a lifespan of 6,000 shots assumed.

The company is a member of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the Hunting & Shooting Sports Heritage Foundation (HSSHF). According to the company, all employees are members of the National Rifle Association .

The designer at Kel-Tec is George L. Kellgren, who was formerly President of Grendel Inc. in Rockledge (Florida). The first pistol, the Kel-Tec P-11, therefore resembles the Grendel P-10. Kellgren also worked for Intratec Inc. of Miami, Florida, where the CAT 9 pistol is manufactured.
