Merritt Island is an island and a census-designated place (CDP) of the same name in Brevard County in the US state of Florida with 34,743 inhabitants (as of 2010).

On the island is Cape Canaveral with the space stations Kennedy Space Center of NASA and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station of the US Air Force as well as the nature reserve of the type of a National Wildlife Refuge Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Canaveral National Seashore , a nature reserve and recreation area with 40 km of sandy beaches. The island is bounded in the west by the Indian River ( Intracoastal Waterway ) and in the east by the Atlantic . It is crossed by Florida State Roads A1A , 3 , 402 , 520 and 528 ( Martin Andersen Beachline Expressway , toll).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 34,743 inhabitants were distributed over 17,036 households. The population density was 760.2 inh / km². 88.7% of the population identified themselves as whites , 4.9% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 2.2% as Asian Americans . 1.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.6% to several ethnic groups. 6.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 26.2% of all households and persons aged at least 65 years in 34.2% of all households. 65.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.33 people and the average family size was 2.82 people.

21.5% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 17.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 33.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 27.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 48 years. 49.0% of the population were male and 51.0% were female.

The median annual income was $ 58,528, with 9.5% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 93.27% of the population, 3.61% spoke Spanish and 3.12% had another mother tongue.
