The Indian River is a river on the east coast of the US state Florida . It has a length of 150 miles from north to south and forms part of the Indian River Lagoon . The water is wide and shallow. Fresh water and salt water mix in it . The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway takes advantage of the Indian River. The northern end of the Indian River is in Volusia County , very close to its southern border with Brevard County . The Indian River extends south to St. Lucie Inlet in northern Martin County .

To the east of Merritt Island in the northeast is the Mosquito Lagoon , to which the Indian River is only connected by a small canal. Across from the island where NASA's space center is located are Titusville and Indian River City . At Indian Harbor Beach , a good bit further south, the Banana River flows in , which extends east of Merritt Island and the spit that separates the water system from the open Atlantic.
