history

Titusville was founded in 1867 when the Confederate - Colonel Henry Theodore Titus the banks of the Indian River entered, although the first US Post Office had already been opened in the area in 1859, which had been known as Sand Point (Sand Point).

In the 1880s and 1890s, the first bank, fishing industry and rail link between Titusville and companies on the north coast were built. In addition, two newspapers have already appeared. The extension of the tracks from Jacksonville south along the east coast to the Titusville railroad station was built in 1892. In the years that followed, a water supply network was built, a fire brigade was established, the second bank was built, the streets were paved and a sewage system was installed.

Like almost all cities in the USA, Titusville was deeply hit by the economic depression of the 1930s. Since there were no airports on the east coast between Jacksonville and Miami, Arthur Dunn Airpark was set up in 1927 as an emergency landing site for the airmail service of that time.

The 1950s and through to the early 1960s were a period of unchanged growth with significant population increases. The space age had begun and with the Kennedy space center came the accompanying boom, which brought the first motels, the first apartment building, a hospital, shopping centers, new golf courses and, last but not least, churches.

Not far from Titusville is the archaeological site of Windover , it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Florida and one of the largest archaeological moor find complexes worldwide. In the marsh- like Windover bog , which was only half investigated , the remains of at least 168 bog corpses from the 6th millennium BC were discovered in 1982 . . BC unearthed . Parts of the finds that are important for early American history are on display at the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science in Cocoa , Florida.
