New Smyrna Beach is located on the east coast of Florida directly on the Atlantic Ocean and on the Halifax River , which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway . The city is about 15 km south of Daytona Beach and 70 km northeast of Orlando .
history
New Smyrna Beach was founded in 1768, shortly after the British acquired East Florida in 1763, by the Scottish doctor and businessman Dr. Andrew Turnbull after he received the settlement area from the British Crown. At that time it was only called New Smyrna, named after the Greek birthplace of Smyrna of his wife Maria Gracia Turnbull. It is the oldest city in Volusia County and one of the oldest in all of Florida. Due to the fact that Spanish missionaries settled in the area as early as the 1560s, New Smyrna Beach is often referred to as the second oldest city in the United States . Founder Turnbull brought around 1255 settlers from Smyrna (today Izmir , Turkey ), the Greek Islands, Italy and Menorca to grow indigo, corn, rice, hemp and cotton. Although the colony produced relatively large quantities of processed indigo, it collapsed in 1770, weakened by disease, disagreement, and assaults by local Indigo. The remaining 600 settlers fled north to St. Augustine in 1770, where their descendants still live today. Turnbull left the settlement and retired in Charleston, South Carolina.
