Edgewater is a city in Volusia County in the US state of Florida with 20,750 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Edgewater is on the Atlantic Ocean and borders the city of New Smyrna Beach to the north . The city is about 35 km east of DeLand and about 80 km northeast of Orlando .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 20,750 inhabitants were distributed over 9,929 households. The population density was 364 inhabitants / km². 94.1% of the population identified themselves as whites, 2.6% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 0.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.6% to several ethnic groups. 3.4% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 26.2% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 38.0% of all households. 66.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.36 people and the average family size was 2.79 people.

21.5% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 20.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 29.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 47 years. 48.3% of the population were male and 51.7% were female.

The median annual income was $ 45,493, with 10.2% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 95.33% of the population, 2.41% spoke Spanish and 2.26% had another mother tongue.

Attractions

On July 10, 2008, the Hawks Archeological Site was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

traffic

The city is crossed by Interstate 95 , US Highway 1 and Florida State Road 442 . In addition, the Florida East Coast Railway's freight line runs through the city. The nearest airport is Daytona Beach International Airport (30 km north).

crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 218 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were three rapes, ten robberies, 37 assaults, 199 break-ins, 399 thefts, 35 car thefts and four arson attacks.
