The Volusia County is a county in the state of Florida in the United States . The county seat is DeLand .
history
Volusia County was formed on December 29, 1854 from parts of Orange County. It was named after a settlement on the St. Johns River .
geography
The county has an area of 3710 square kilometers, of which 853 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Brevard County , Seminole County , Lake County , Marion County , Putnam County, and Flagler County . Together with Flagler County, the county forms the metropolitan area of Deltona – Daytona Beach – Ormond Beach .

According to the 2010 census , Volusia County had 494,593 people in 253,924 households. The population density was 173.1 people per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 82.5% white, 10.5% African American , 0.4% American Indian and 1.5% Asian Americans . 2.9% were members of other races and 2.1% of different races. 11.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 35.7% of all households lived in 25.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 62.6% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.31 people and the average family size was 2.84 people.
21.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 28.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 45 years. 48.9% of the population were male and 51.1% were female.
The median income for a household in the 43,419 USD , while 16.0% of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the first language of 87.34% of the population, Spanish was spoken by 8.12% and 4.54% had another mother tongue.
