The Putnam County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Palatka .

history

Israel Putnam

Putnam County was formed on January 13, 1849 from parts of Alachua County. After whom it was named cannot be determined. There are two versions for this. One says it was named after Israel Putnam , a hero in the French Indian War and later a general in the American Revolutionary War. The second version states that it was named after Benjamin A. Putnam , a local Florida politician and officer in the First Seminole War .

The county has an area of ​​2,142 square kilometers, of which 273 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: St. Johns County , Flagler County , Volusia County , Marion County , Alachua County, and Clay County .

According to the 2010 census , Putnam County had 74,364 people in 37,208 households. The population density was 39.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 77.3% white, 16.2% African American , 0.5% Native American and 0.6% Asian Americans . 3.7% were members of other races and 1.7% of different races. 9.0% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 34.9% of all households lived in 29.2% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 67.1% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.48 people and the average family size was 2.97 people.

25.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 26.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 43 years. 49.6% of the population were male and 50.4% were female.

The median income for a household in the 34,429 USD , while 25.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the first language of 91.34% of the population, 7.40% spoke Spanish and 1.23% had another mother tongue.
