Welaka is a city in Putnam County in the US state of Florida with 701 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Welaka is about 25 km west of Palatka and about 100 km south of Jacksonville on the east bank of the St. Johns River .

history

The place was founded on July 6, 1852 by the settler James William Bryant and raised to town on June 21, 1887 . Welaka has been known for the mineral springs in the local area and their healing properties since the beginning of the 20th century. On November 15, 1907, the Welaka Mineral Water Company was founded.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 701 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 561 households. The population density was 200.3 inh / km². 74.9% of the population identified themselves as whites, 22.7% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.3% as Asian Americans . 0.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.1% to several ethnic groups. 3.4% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 18.3% of all households and people aged 65 and over in 50.8% of all households. 59.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.14 people and the average family size was 2.64 people.

16.8% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 13.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 45.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 57 years. 46.5% of the population were male and 53.5% were female.

The median annual income was $ 26,793, with 30.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 100% of the population.

On May 7, 1973, Mount Royal was entered on the National Register of Historic Places .

The crime rate in 2010 was 29 points (US average: 266 points) in the very low range. There was one break-in and four thefts.
