East Palatka is a census-designated place (CDP) in Putnam County in the US state of Florida with 1654 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

East Palatka borders directly on Palatka to the west and is about 60 km south of Jacksonville . The Memorial Bridge over the St. Johns River connects the place with Palatka. About them leading US Highway 17 ( SR 15 , 20 , 100 ) to which the East Palatka Florida State Road 207 hits.

history

A first railway line was built in 1885 by the Saint Augustine and Palatka Railroad (StA & P) between East Palatka and St. Augustine . The St. Johns & Halifax River Railroad opened a railway line from here via Bunnell to Daytona Beach the following year . A bridge was built by the StA & P to Palatka over the St. Johns River in 1888. Both companies were first united in 1892 to form the Jacksonville, Saint Augustine & Indian River Railway , which in turn became part of the Florida East Coast Railway in 1896 . In 1925 the line to Bunnell was closed, in 1942 the river crossing to Palatka and in the 1960s the section towards St. Augustine to Hastings .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 1654 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 628 households. The population density was 199.3 inh / km². 62.2% of the population identified themselves as whites, 32.5% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.5% as Asian Americans . 2.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.6% to several ethnic groups. 10.5% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 39.9% of all households lived in 26.8% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 64.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.47 people and the average family size was 2.91 people.

17.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 36.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 21.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 64.3% of the population were male and 35.7% were female.

The median annual income was $ 31,569, with 32.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 97.93% of the population and 2.07% spoke Spanish .
