Palatka is a city and also the county seat of Putnam County in the state of Florida with 10,558 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Palatka is on the left bank of the St. Johns River and about 60 km south of Jacksonville .

history

The place received its first railway connection in 1884 with the construction of the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railway between Jacksonville and Palatka. This line was extended to Sanford in 1886 . After several sales and restructuring, the line finally came into the possession of CSX Transportation in 1986 .

The construction of the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway (GS & F) between Valdosta ( Georgia ) and Palatka took place in 1890, which Palatka turned into an important hub. After the early bankruptcy of the company, the GS&F went as a subsidiary in 1895 to the Southern Railway , which in turn merged in 1990 with the Norfolk and Western to the Norfolk Southern Railway . The line itself was shut down between Lake City and Palatka in the late 1980s after Norfolk Southern acquired the route usage rights between Jacksonville and Palatka from CSX . The section from Lake Butler to Palatka has now been converted by the Florida Department of Transportation into the 76 km long Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail .

Another route ran from 1888 to 1942 over a railway bridge over the St. Johns River to St. Augustine , which was built by the Saint Augustine and Palatka Railroad .
