Valdosta is a city and also the county seat of Lowndes County in the US state of Georgia with 54,518 inhabitants (as of 2010). The city is the center of the metropolitan area of ​​Valdosta .

geography

Valdosta is located in the extreme south of Georgia, around 20 km from the Florida border . The city is located around 120 km northeast of Tallahassee (Florida) and around 350 km south of Atlanta .

history

Valdosta was founded on December 7th, 1860. The residents originally lived in nearby Troupville, a dock for steam boats on the Withlacoochee River. When the new railway line was built past Troupville six kilometers away, people moved to the railway and founded Valdosta there.

Valdosta is home to Valdosta State University , founded in 1906 as the South Georgia State Normal College for Women .

In Valdosta there is the amusement park "Wild Adventures".

Doc Holliday attended school here before studying dentistry in Philadelphia .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 54,518 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 20,471 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.46 people per household. There are a total of 22,709 households.

The average annual income per household was 31,199 USD , while 33.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.

The crime rate in 2010 was 417 points (US average: 266 points) in the above-average range. There were three murders, 17 rapes, 81 robberies, 169 physical injuries, 856 break-ins, 1665 thefts, 112 car thefts and nine arson attacks.
