Charles Whitlow "Charlie" Norwood (born July 27, 1941 in Valdosta , Georgia , †  February 13, 2007 in Augusta , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1995 and 2007 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charlie Norwood attended Baylor Military High School in Chattanooga ( Tennessee ) until 1959 and then Georgia Southern University in Statesboro until 1964 . He then studied dentistry until 1967 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC . Between 1967 and 1969 he was in the US Army dental service . He was also used in Vietnam . Then he worked as a private dentist.

Politically, Norwood became a member of the Republican Party . In the 1994 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the tenth constituency of Georgia, where he succeeded Clete Donald Johnson on January 3, 1995 . After six re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on February 13, 2007 . From 2003 to January 3, 2007, he represented the ninth district as the successor to Nathan Deal . In January 2007, he became a member of the tenth district again. Norwood campaigned for better immigration control and called for more soldiers to be sent to the Mexican border to ward off illegal immigrants.

In 2004, Norwood underwent a lung transplant . In December 2006, a cancer of the liver was discovered. He then received chemotherapy . Because of this illness, he was subsequently barely able to attend the congress sessions. On February 13, 2007, Charlie Norwood succumbed to his illness. He had two sons with his wife Gloria. His mandate fell to Paul Broun after a by-election .
