Henry Persons

Henry Persons (born January 30, 1834 in Smarrs , Monroe County , Georgia , †  June 17, 1910 in Talbotton , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

As early as 1836, Henry Persons came to Talbot County , where he attended public schools. He then studied until 1855 at the University of Georgia in Athens . During the Civil War he was captain of a cavalry unit from Georgia that fought for the Confederation .

After the war, Persons worked in agriculture in Talbot County. Later he became politically active as an independent democrat . In the congressional elections of 1878 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Henry R. Harris on March 4, 1879 , whom he had defeated in the election. Since he was no longer nominated by his party in the elections of 1880, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1881 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Persons moved to Geneva . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1885, he began to work in his new profession in Talbotton. Between 1898 and 1910 he was a judge in Talbot County. From 1894 he also served as a curator for the University of Georgia.
