Samuel Rutherford (born March 15, 1870 in Culloden , Crawford County , Georgia , †  February 4, 1932 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1932 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Rutherford attended the common schools and then studied at the Washington and Lee University in Lexington ( Virginia ). After a subsequent law degree at the University of Georgia in Athens and his admission as a lawyer in 1894, he began to work in Forsyth in his new profession. He was mayor of this city for three years.

Rutherford was a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives in 1896 and 1897 . From 1898 to 1900 Rutherford served as a prosecutor at the Forsyth City Court. Between 1901 and 1916 he was also active in the banking industry. Rutherford was a member of the Georgia Senate in 1909 and 1910 . In the meantime he worked again as a lawyer and in agriculture. Between 1921 and 1924 Rutherford was once again a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

In the 1924 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the sixth constituency of Georgia, where he succeeded James W. Wise on March 4, 1925 . After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on February 4, 1932 . Since 1931 he was chairman of the election committee for the presidential and congressional elections.
