John Heddens "Jack" Kingston (* 24. April 1955 in Bryan , Texas ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives from 1993 to 2015 .

Originally from Texas, Jack Kingston moved to Athens , Georgia early on . He graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in economics . He has lived in Savannah since 1977 . Before going into politics, he worked as an insurance agent and in the agricultural sector for more than ten years.

In 1984 Kingston was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, where he represented the state's 153rd electoral district after several re-elections until 1993. In 1992 he stopped running and instead applied for a seat in Congress in Washington . In the 1st  congressional electoral district of Georgia, which includes the cities of Savannah, Brunswick and Valdosta , the Democratic incumbent Lindsay Thomas did not run after ten years. With 58 percent of the vote, Kingston decided the race for the successor against the Democrat Barbara Christmas for himself, making him the first Republican victorious in this district since Andrew Sloan in 1874. He was then confirmed ten times in office. In 1998 and 2004 he even remained unopposed. In the 2008 election he achieved his worst result since 1992 with 66.5 percent of the vote.

Kingston is conservative in both economic and social terms. He rejects abortions and advocates tax cuts. As a creationist , he rejected the theory of evolution . He doesn't believe in a connection between human behavior and climate change. From 2003 to 2006 he was Vice-Chairman of the House Republican Conference .

In the run-up to the 2014 Senate elections , Kingston announced his candidacy for the seat of the no longer running Saxby Chambliss . In the primary of his party he reached second place with 25.8 percent of the votes behind the politically inexperienced businessman David Perdue , who missed the absolute majority and thus had to face Kingston in a runoff election. Perdue then narrowly won it with 50.9 percent of the vote. Perdue also won the actual election against Democrat Michelle Nunn and entered Congress on January 3, 2015, which Kingston had to leave on the same day.
