James Moore Wayne
James Moore Wayne (* 1790 in Savannah , Georgia - † July 5, 1867 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and judge on the Supreme Court . He was also a member of the US House of Representatives for the state of Georgia .
Life
In 1808 he graduated from Princeton College . After studying law in New Haven ( Connecticut ) and admission to the Bar Association in 1810. He practiced law in Savannah. He served in the military during the British-American War . Wayne was then a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1815 to 1816 and Mayor of Savannah from September 8, 1817 to July 12, 1819.
In the following years he served as a judge in Georgia until he was elected as a Democrat to Congress on March 4, 1829 , where he succeeded George Rockingham Gilmer . On January 13, 1835, he resigned this mandate to accept his appointment as Supreme Court Justice by President Andrew Jackson ; he succeeded the late William Johnson . From January 14, 1835 until his death on July 5, 1867, he worked as Associate Justice .
James Wayne was buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery , Savannah.
