John James Flynt

John James Flynt Jr. (born November 8, 1914 in Griffin , Georgia , † June 24, 2007 there ) was an American politician . He represented the state of Georgia as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Flynt attended public school and the Georgia Military Academy (now Woodward Academy ). He later went to the University of Georgia at Athens , where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Literary Society . He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1936. He then served in the United States Army from 1936 to 1937, and during the Second World War (1941-1945). After the war, he continued his service in the United States Army Reserve.

Flynt visited the Law School of Emory University from 1937 to 1938 and graduated in 1940 at the Law School of the George Washington University . After he was admitted to the bar, he worked in his practice and was later assistant federal attorney for the northern district of Georgia between 1939 and 1941, and also between 1945 and 1946. He was then elected as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives . There he was between 1947 and 1948. He was then Attorney General of Griffins Judicial District between 1949 and 1954. He was also chairman of Griffin's Bar Association from 1952 to 1954. Flynt was a delegate to the Georgia Democratic Party Conventions in 1946, 1950, 1954, 1958, 1962 and 1966, and to the Democratic National Conventions of 1960 and 1968.

He was elected a Democrat in an extraordinary election to the 83rd Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of MP Albert Sidney Camp . Flynt was then elected to eleven subsequent conventions. His tenure ranged from November 2, 1954 to January 3, 1979. During his tenure, he chaired the US Standards Committee (94th and 95th Congresses). After defeating political newcomer Newt Gingrich in 1974 and 1976, Flynt decided to resign from Congress. He did not run again for re-election to the 96th Congress in 1978. After that, Flynt took up his old practice as a lawyer and started farming too. He also participated in banks and real estate.

John James Flynt, Jr. lived in Griffin, Georgia until his death on June 24, 2007.
