Griffin is a city and also the county seat of Spalding County in the US state of Georgia with 23,643 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Griffin is about 50 km south of Atlanta .

history

The railroad reached Griffin from the direction of Macon in 1842 with a new station of the then Monroe Railroad and Banking Company . The existing settlement was officially named a city on December 28, 1843. In 1846 the railroad to Atlanta closed the gap.

Doc Holliday was born in Griffin in 1851 and had his dental practice here before moving west because of his tuberculosis disease.

In 1872 the local newspaper Griffin Daily News , which still exists today, was founded.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 23,643 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 8,941 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.58 people per household. There are a total of 10,524 households.

65.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.16 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 36.7% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 24.9% of all households.

30.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 28.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 17.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 34 years. 47.1% of the population were male and 52.9% were female.

42.8% of the population identified themselves as white , 52.2% as African-American , 0.3% as Native American and 1.1% as Asian Americans . 1.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 4.0% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 30,692 USD , while 33.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Griffin is crossed by US Highways 19 and 41 (on a shared route) and Georgia State Routes 16 , 92 , 155 and 362 . Griffin-Spalding County Airport is located in the southern part of the city . The nearest international airport is Atlanta Airport (around 40 km north).

The crime rate in 2010 was 546 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were six murders, seven rapes, 48 ​​robberies, 91 assaults, 285 break-ins, 1285 thefts, 62 car thefts and six arson attacks.
